Player Eligibility – Only active members of the First Tee of Pittsburgh will be eligible to play in our chapter’s 13U and 17U PGA Junior League programs. Players ages 7-13 may register and participate in the 13U regular season, but only players age 13 and under on July 31, 2020 will be eligible for the All-Star team and post-season play. Players ages 14-17 may register for the 17U regular season, which will use the same dates and locations for their games.
Registration Timeline & Program Fee – Members may register on The First Tee of Pittsburgh website beginning February 10, 2020, and pay their $80 Program Fee to the First Tee of Pittsburgh. Any chapter member of the First Tee of Pittsburgh who meets the national financial aid guidlines is eligible for a PGA Reach scholarship, which will cover the $175 PGA Junior League fee. Program enrollment is taken on a first come, first served basis, and will continue until a maximum of 96 players have registered, or registration closes on March 31, 2020, whichever comes first.
PGA Junior League Captain – PGA Professional Eric Kulinna will serve as the PGA Junior League Captain during the regular season for all 13U and 17U teams, and coach the 13U All Star team throughout the post-season playoffs. He will be assisted on a weekly basis throughout the regular season by Assistant Captain Aaron Lindauer from the First Tee of Pittsburgh coaching staff.
Team Coaches & Scorekeepers – Our PGA Junior League program will only work with engaged Parents and Guardians, and we encourage you to get involved and volunteer. Each 13U PGA Junior League team will need TWO adult coaches, and at least TWO adult scorekeepers each week. Parents and Guardians who are interested in being a Team Coach should contact PGA Professional Eric Kulinna, and he will assist you in completing the required background check. Once the team rosters have been finalized, we will have a MANDATORY 90-minute Coach Training session on Sunday, April 5, 2020.
Registration Processing – Once members have registered on the First Tee of Pittsburgh website, chapter staff will send the participant’s contact details (Player Name, Age, Parent/Guardian Name, Phone Number and Email Address) to PGA Professional Eric Kulinna. He will then email the parent/guardian of the participant with the ACCESS CODE that will be needed to register their child in the First Tee of Pittsburgh 13U or 17U programs on the PGA Junior League website (www.pgajrleague.com).
PGAJL participants MUST register both with the First Tee of Pittsburgh on our website, AND with PGA Junior League on their national website. Your child’s registration in the FTP PGAJL program is not complete until you do both.
PGA Reach Scholarship Financial Aid – If you qualify for financial aid, you will need a PGA Reach Scholarship code to complete the PGA Junior League registration. The PGA Reach Scholarship code will cover the $175 program fee, and allow you to register your child on the PGA Junior League website.
Team Formation – Once we have players registered, we will begin to form teams, with rostering to be completed by April 5th at the latest. Team rosters will be determined by age, ability, member level, and programming location. We will strive to get evenly matched teams, and make sure that each team has at least two trained adults who will serve as coaches during the games.
Team Names & Nine Core Values – All FTP PGAJL teams will have their team name printed on the back of their jerseys, and the teams in our league will be named after the First Tee Nine Core Values. Each week, each team will be asked to demonstrate their core value in a different way during their matches. All players, coaches and spectators will be asked to demonstrate all of the Nine Core Values of the First Tee during PGA Junior League play.
Team Kits & Player Uniforms – Each player will receive Orange (Home) and Blue (Away) jersey with their number and team name on the back, and a hat to be worn during games. They will also receive a PGAJL T-Shirt, bag tag, and a black drawstring bag to keep their gear in.
Regular Season Practices – We strongly encourage all PGAJL participants to be actively enrolled in FTP programming classes. All FTP PGAJL team members are eligible to attend our NEW Open Play and Practice class on Thursday nights at The Bob from 5:00-7:00 PM. Coaches Eric Kulinna and Aaron Lindauer will be available during that time to work with individual players, and the adult volunteer coaches, to devise practice plans that would be geared towards developing additional golf skills and knowledge of scramble and match play strategies.
Post Season Competition – Players that make The First Tee of Pittsburgh All-Star team will compete in the TSPGA Section Qualifier, which will be played during the week of August 10-14, at a location, day, and time to be determined. Teams that advance through the section Qualifier will play in the TSPGA Section Championship at Youghiogheny CC on Thursday, August 20, 2020. The TSPGA Section Champions will advance to the Regional Championship which is scheduled for late August, and the winner of that event will qualify for the National Championship, which will be played October 8-11, 2020 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, and to be broadcasted live on ESPN.
Coach Training & Parent/Guardian Orientation – Once the teams are formed, the Coach Training will be held on Sunday, April 5, 2020 for the coaches of each team. The Coach and Assistant Coach for each team will be primarily responsible for setting the lineups before each regular season game, making sure that official scorecards are kept for each match, and posting the game scores. The general Parent/Guardian Orientation will be held in the afternoon on Sunday, April 19, 2020, and will review scorekeeping, communication procedures, and the general game schedule.
Team Day & Uniform Kit Distribution – All the players, coaches, and parents/guardians will meet together on Sunday, April 26, 2020, from 3:00-6:00 PM. The players will get to meet their teammates and coaches, and will receive their uniform kits. The teams will have the opportunity to conduct an “intrasquad” practice together on the course.
SportEngine App – The PGA of America will be using the SportEngine app in 2020 to share information about the PGA Junior League program. Coaches will post pairings and results, and can communicate delays and other pertinent information through push notifications on the app. Parents can also digitally share photos and videos with each other. The SportEngine app is available at both the Apple and Android stores, and all parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to download the app to their phones, and learn how to use it, as it will be our primary communication platform during the season.
Post Season Practices & Fees – The TFT Pittsburgh 13U PGA JL All-Star team members will be asked to attend regular team practices at a location to be determined to prepare for the Section Championship. If needed, an additional tiered fee for the All Star players may be charged to cover expenses. Should the team continue to advance through the playoffs it may be necessary to collect additional fees, however at that point, the chapter will seek a sponsor to cover the costs incurred.
Registration opens August 26, 2020
